A field note for better stays

A hotel decision does not have to be complicated, but it helps to know which details deserve attention first. These are small checks you can use when comparing real properties.

Draw a small everyday radius

Look at the two or three blocks immediately around a candidate hotel. Find where you can buy water, grab breakfast, access public transport or simply take a safe and straightforward walk. That micro-neighbourhood usually shapes your stay more than the landmark ten kilometres away.

The same test works for both city and small-town trips, but adjust it for terrain, climate and mobility.

Read the route, not the distance

A 400-metre route with traffic crossings, steep steps or poor pavement is not equivalent to a level 400-metre walk. Check how long it will take with bags and how often you will repeat it.

For destinations with ferries, hills or limited buses, confirm the last leg at the time of day you will actually travel.

Put value into context

A cheaper room ten minutes farther away is not necessarily a bargain if you will spend more on taxis or lose time every day. Conversely, a quiet location outside a busy core may be exactly the value you want.

The right base is personal: optimize for your planned day, not for an abstract star rating.
